Hello all,

I am very new to soapmaking.

I plan in making a soap cutting jig similar to the image below. What type of wire is suggested ? Will (ordinary) guitar wire string(s) suffice or is there any special requirement (like type of metal, guage, hardness etc.) ?

Thank you in advance.

P.S. If plausible, I wish to use this (some chinese brand guitar strings).

Hello @arunagirinathar ,

Any thin enough string will do, of course it should hold to the stress that will be applied, I usually use thin fishing lines, they have a good tensile strength and can be bought by the roll.

i use guitar strings. if you buy a set, try to buy a 12 string guitar has it has many thinner gage strings..

You can get a high quality 20 - 22 gauge stainless steel wire from TEMCO Industrial for a very good price. $5.86 for a 50 foot roll of the 304L grade or $7.81 for the 316L grade which is more corrosion resistant. PLUS it's free shipping! They quite fast at shipping out too.
Temco Industrial SS Wire

Very tough and I use it for my wire soap slicer. A lot less expensive that buying guitar strings and you use just what you need with no waste.
