Step-by-Step Instructions
- Weigh and mix lye: Put on your safety gear. Weigh your potassium hydroxide and distilled water in separate containers. Slowly pour the potassium hydroxide into the water (never water into lye) while stirring gently until dissolved.
- Heat oils: Place your olive, coconut, and castor oils into the slow cooker and warm them on low until fully melted.
- Blend together: Pour the warm lye solution directly into the warm oils. Use an immersion blender to mix the solution until it reaches a thick trace (resembling pudding or applesauce).
- Add glycerin: Stir the vegetable glycerin into the thick soap mixture.
- Cook the paste: Cover the slow cooker and cook the mixture on low (around 165°F to 175°F) for 2 to 3 hours. Stir every 30 minutes. The paste is finished when it looks translucent, glossy, and resembles vaseline.
- Dilute the paste: Turn off the heat and add hot distilled water (2:1 worked well, typically 1.5 to 2 parts water to 1 part paste, depending on your preferred thickness). Let it sit covered overnight until the paste fully dissolves into a smooth liquid soap.
- Scent and bottle: Stir in essential oils if desired, then pour your finished liquid soap into dispenser bottles. [1, 5, 6, 7, 8]
