Shave Soap w/Kukum and Murumuru

Notes:
  • Goat Milk Powder: Since you are adding this after the cook, mix it with a tiny bit of the warm glycerin first to form a smooth paste. This prevents "white clumps" in your finished soap.
  • WARM the glycerin, kokum
  • WARM some water and add a tablespoon at a time if needed to smooth out the batter
Here's a step-by-step breakdown:
  1. Prepare Lye Solution: Carefully mix lye (sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and often potassium hydroxide (KOH) for softer shaving soaps) into water, ensuring it's fully dissolved and safe.
  2. Melt Oils & Fats: Heat hard oils (like tallow, cocoa butter, shea butter) and waxes (like soy wax) in a slow cooker until fully melted.
  3. Combine & Cook: Slowly add the lye solution to the melted oils, stir, and then cook the mixture in the slow cooker (on low) for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to a translucent, pudding-like or Vaseline consistency, indicating saponification is complete.
  4. Add Extras (Post-Cook): Stir in lanolin, vitamin E, essential oils, fragrances, and colorants after cooking, as the high heat can burn off scents.
  5. Mold & Cure: Pour the finished soap batter into molds, let it cool, and then unmold and cut. Hot process soap can often be used sooner than cold process soap but benefits from extended curing (months) for optimal performance.
