JohnRudolf’s Shave Soap

Notes:
This is a hybrid soap using both NaOH and KOH. It will remain semi-soft, like a premium Italian shaving croap. It will be too soft to slice into pucks. It is best to mold it directly into a cosmetics container. A suggested container would be these 4oz plastic jars with lids from Amazon. This recipe has been scaled to fill two of those containers above.
This recipe is too small for a crock pot. Melt the oils in a double boiler made from a pyrex measuring container in a pot of boiling water.

Fast Hot Process

Keep the pyrex container in the boiling water, while stirring, carefully pour the lye water into the oils, you will achieve a trace almost immediately. And very shortly after go through several other stages, including almost seized. Keep stirring until it stops changing. This only took about 10 minutes the last few times I’ve done it. I’ve not needed to use a stick blender, and in fact, some of the stages I’ve seen would be too stiff for my stick blender. Just a spoon or spatula is enough with a batch this small.

Post Cook Additions

Melt the Cocoa Butter in a different container, add it and the glycerin to the soap and thoroughly stir it in. Ensure the temperature is at or below 150degF before adding in the fragrance oil.

Transfer to container

Scoop the soap into its container. It should be loose enough that you can tap the container to remove air pockets. If not, wait until the soap is cool enough that you can pack it in with a spoon or your fingers.
